Operation: Move the straight rod and see what happens. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a rotatable straight rod and an acrylic plate with a hyperbolic slit. When you move the straight rod, you will find that it can magically pass through the curved slit on the acrylic plate. Scientific Principle: What is the secret? When the inclined straight rod rotates around a vertical axis, it traces a hyperboloid in space. Since the acrylic plate is a plane passing through the vertical axis, the curved slit is exactly the intersection line of the acrylic plate and the hyperboloid. When the straight rod rotates, it passes exactly through the curved slit. The cooling tower structure of a thermal power plant is a hyperboloid shape, which can be constructed with straight steel beams. This reduces wind resistance and also maintains structural integrity with the least amount of material.
