Conic Sections
Operation: Rotate the cone, and the liquid level inside the cone will change with the rotation angle. Starting from one end, the shape of the liquid surface inside the cone will sequentially be a circle, ellipse, parabola, hyperbola, and triangle. Functional Overview: The exhibit consists of a cabinet, a cone, and a dial. A conic section is the locus of points where the ratio of the distance to the vertex to the distance to a fixed line is constant. Scientific Principle: Conic sections include circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas. By intersecting a plane with a conical surface, different cutting angles produce different conic sections. In daily life, we use the properties of parabolas to design solar cookers. The orbits of celestial bodies in the universe are elliptical.
