Orthogonal Cross Mill
Operation: Participants push the slider and move it along, observing the phenomenon. Function Overview: This exhibit demonstrates to the audience the basic principle of an ellipsograph. The trajectories of two points fixed on a lever intersect at right angles. Scientific Principle: This exhibit consists of a mechanical interactive device and graphic explanations. A movable slider is mounted on a cross-shaped slide groove. Below the slider is a rotating rod. This rotating rod is connected as one unit with the vertical and horizontal sliders. Participants push the Shanghai inertia slider and move it along; the two sliders in the track move smoothly without colliding, the two sliders move within two slots, and the trajectory of each point on the moving rod forms ellipses with different major and minor axes.
