Force-Chain
★Exhibit Content: Photoelastic effect and stress distribution science experience ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction + optical demonstration ★Operation: 1. Rotate the turntable to observe the movement of the transparent disc and changes in the light path; 2. Move the slider to drive the circular magnet to move within the turntable; observe the changes in the light path inside the disc. ★Exhibit Description: "Stress Chain" is an interactive exhibit for materials mechanics and optics science, designed for the physical science exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit of the Tanxingmao Science and Technology Museum. The exhibit uses a transparent disc made of photoelastic material. Visitors rotate the turntable and move the slider to drive the magnet, causing the small square pieces inside the disc to squeeze each other. Under polarized light, the birefringence caused by stress in the material is transformed into clear "stress chain" ripple images, intuitively presenting the stress distribution patterns inside the material. ★Scientific Principle: When the small square pieces made of photoelastic material squeeze each other, stress appears inside. The presence of stress causes deformation of the material, producing birefringence. Under polarized light, interference creates ripple images. Many ripple images connected together produce the interesting "stress chain" effect. Since stress is related to optical path difference, the more concentrated the stress, the stronger the anisotropy, and the finer and denser the interference fringes.
