Breathable but Waterproof Fabric

Technology Innovation

★Exhibit Content: PTFE membrane breathable but waterproof properties and microporous material principle ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the button to start the device; 2. Observe the test process of PTFE membrane being breathable but waterproof. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a specially shaped display stand, a vertical transparent test cylinder, a PTFE functional membrane module, an air pressure generating device, a water storage module, and a start control panel. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. A PTFE microporous membrane is embedded in the middle of the test cylinder, dividing the interior into two independent upper and lower areas. When visitors press the start button, the device begins to operate. It can be clearly observed that the water body above cannot leak downward through the membrane, while the airflow generated below can smoothly pass through the micropores and overflow upward. Through this intuitive controlled experiment, the magical property of this special membrane being "breathable but waterproof" is vividly demonstrated, allowing visitors to experience up close the unique application charm of functional polymer materials. ★Scientific Principle: This breathable but waterproof membrane, also called PTFE membrane, is a microporous membrane made from polytetrafluoroethylene plastic resin as raw material, using its pore-forming characteristics through a biaxial stretching process. The membrane surface can have more than a billion micropores per square centimeter. The diameter of each micropore is several hundred times smaller than liquid water molecular clusters, but tens of thousands of times larger than gaseous water vapor molecules. Therefore, gaseous water vapor and air can freely pass through the micropores, while liquid water droplets cannot pass through the micropores due to surface tension. This property is widely used in outdoor protective fabrics, medical protective equipment, environmental filtration, and many other fields, and is a typical application of functional polymer materials.
