Standing Sound Waves

Science Caravan · Waves

Exhibit Dimensions: Transport dimensions: 540×440×640mm, Display dimensions: 540×440×1450mm. Exhibit Composition: Composed of an ABS plastic molded cabinet, ABS plastic molded pedestal, ABS milky white plastic molded operation countertop with color silk-screened flip-over instruction board, leakage protector, standing wave tube, speaker, start button, frequency adjustment button, etc. By using the vibration trajectories of small foam balls to visualize the shape of acoustic standing waves, it achieves an intuitive and easy-to-understand effect. Used to explore the formation and characteristics of acoustic standing waves. Scientific Principle: Why do the small particles in the tube dance? Because the incident sound wave emitted by the speaker reflects at the other end of the tube to form a reflected wave. At specific frequencies, the incident and reflected waves superimpose to form a standing wave. The points with maximum amplitude are called antinodes, and those with minimum amplitude are called nodes. When the frequency of the sound source is adjusted, the positions of the antinodes and nodes and the vibration amplitude change accordingly, creating the phenomenon that looks like small particles dancing. Standing waves have important applications in acoustics, optics, radio, and other disciplines; they can be used to measure wavelength or determine the natural frequency of a vibrating system.
